About the Event

Make the most of our extra May Bank holiday to visit Madeira, a very popular and lush island rich in natural beauty, mountains, lovely people and fantastic healthy food.

The island of Madeira is about twice the area of the Isle of Wight and slightly larger than Singapore island. Together with the islands of Porto Santo and Desertas and the Selvagens—Madeira forms an autonomous region of the country of Portugal.  The climate is semi-tropical.

On this trip, we will stay in the capital city of Funchal and hike the two most popular routes with time to enjoy the nightlife of the island and maybe some beach time.

This is a rough itinerary to give you an idea of what to expect.

The exact times and detailed itinerary will be shared with you closer to the trip.

The dates for the hikes might change to allow for bad weather.

Fly to Madeira and get to your accommodation

Dinner and airport transfer details will be shared with you closer to the date.

Hike Pico do Arieiro to Pico Ruivo

Length 7.5 miles - 12 kilometres

Distance 4 to 5 hours

Elevation gain 3,871 ft - 1180 metres

Difficulty Hard

The hike from Pico do Arieiro to Pico Ruivo is the most famous hike on the island of Madeira in Portugal.

This tunnel route leads hikers along narrow pathways, up and down ominous staircases, and through dark tunnel chambers.

It is an adrenaline-filled test of endurance with steep inclines, causing some serious quad and calf burning on the trek. If you are up for the challenge, I promise you it will be the highlight of your trip to Madeira.
