Distance 15.7km (9¾ miles)Â
Total ascent 1167mÂ
Time 10 hours
If you have hiked Scafell Pike before, be ready to meet it and its sisters, Pen and Sca Fell on a hike that will take you a staggering 1176 metres of total ascent with some really fun, or scary, scrambles.
This hike will push you, while we take our time to enjoy a moderate pace and make stops to enjoy the views
Not only is this walk off the beaten track, but it is also one of the finest routes in the whole Lake District, and it offers everything you could desire from a full day on the fells.Â
The walk alongside the River Esk into Upper Eskdale is absolutely beautiful, the view of the Scafells is jaw-dropping as you climb from the valley, Great Moss is stunning simply because of the silence and escape from everyday life... and when climbing to Scafell Pike via the subsidiary summit of Pen, it feels as though you’re blazing a trail and that no other mortal could possibly have climbed this way.  Â
Sca Fell is then reached via Lord’s Rake – a famed scramble – with a long but gentle descent back to Eskdale via Slight Side to round off a magnificent day on the Lake District fells. Apart from on the main summit, we are unlikely to see anyone on this fine route.

ACCOMMODATION
We will stay at the Fabulous Irton Halls.Â
Once visited by Oliver Cromwell and Henry VI, parts of Irton Hall date back to the 14th century. It retains traditional timber framing and other charming features, but offers modern amenities like free Wi-Fi.
Irton Hall has an on-site bar, lounge and restaurant offering locally sourced produce and local ales and a range of beverages. Hearty full English breakfasts are served in the lounge bar, with a selection of lighter continental options also available.
The hall is set at the foothills of the western fells of the Lake District, between Wasdale and Eskdale.Â
We have selected a house that creates a totally unique holiday venue on four floors, featuring spacious beamed rooms, sandstone walls and an original stone spiral staircase from top to bottom of the tower. The third-floor three beds bedroom and en-suite are accessed via this spiral staircase; the other floors have additional standard staircase access, whilst the first-floor living room has a leisure area with a pool table.
ATTENTION!!!
Because of the length of this hike, we must keep a steady pace. We will not walk fast, but if you are struggling and cannot keep up with the group, a second guide will take you on another lovely hike that you can safely handle and finish before sunset.Â
This is a mountain hike and by signing up you agree that you understand that it is expected there to be a risk of life-changing injuries or death.Â
You also agree:Â
- to bring adequated equipment fit for a mountain hike e.g. hiking boots instead of trainers. If not your guide may refuse your ascent to the mountain and no refunds will be made.
- to follow the guidance of your guide and not refuse the advice given, including the request to turn back if you are struggling after a short time in the hike. This is not only for your safety but for the safety and enjoyment of the rest of the group.
